The Top Five Humanoid Robots
A humanoid robot boasts a physical form analogous to the human body. Classified as professional service robots, they are engineered for interacting with human tools and delivering customer service. Additionally, these humanoid robots are deployed for inspection and maintenance tasks. While equipped with features like skin and eyes, they are not constructed from flesh or bone. The most recent models are capable of human-like speech, locomotion, and expressing a broad spectrum of emotions. In this tutorial, we will delve into the world’s top 5 humanoid robots.

The most recent models are capable of human-like speech, locomotion, and expressing a broad spectrum of emotions. In this tutorial, we will delve into the world’s top 5 humanoid robots.
1. Nadine
Nadine is an empathetic robot that responds to greetings, maintains eye contact, and retains all prior conversational content. As a human-like robot, she possesses distinct personality traits, moods, and emotional capabilities. Her face and hands were crafted by the Japanese firm Kokoro, bearing a resemblance to her creator, Professor Nadia Thalmann.
This humanoid robot, characterized by glowing skin and flowing brown hair, can recognize returning visitors, make eye contact, shake hands, and continue conversations based on previous interactions. She is equipped with 3D depth cameras, a microphone, and a webcam to capture visual and audio inputs. Multiple perception layers then process these data to identify faces, gestures, emotions, and behaviors, enabling her to analyze and respond appropriately.
Nadine currently serves as a receptionist at AIA Singapore, an insurance company.
2. Geminoid DK
This robot is a lifelike duplicate of Henry Scharfe from Aalborg University. It represents the latest model in the Geminoid series of ultra-realistic androids, developed through a collaboration between a private Japanese enterprise and Osaka University. The project was overseen by Hiroshi Ishiguro, director of the university’s Intelligent Robotics Laboratory.
The crafting of Geminoid DK took nine months. Beyond replicating Scharfe’s overall appearance, the robot was programmed to mimic his behaviors—even subtle gestures like shrugging. Scharfe also contributed strands of his own hair for the robot’s wig. Due to its striking realism, Geminoid DK is often mistaken for the human it was modeled after. The primary objective behind its creation was to achieve a humanoid design indistinguishable from a real person.
3. Junco Chihira
Junco Chihira is a highly realistic android developed by Toshiba. She works full-time at a tourist information center in Tokyo and is the successor to Aiko Chihira, another android that previously served as a receptionist at a Japanese department store. Initially, Junco Chihira could only respond with pre-scripted dialogue, but since 2017, she has been equipped with speech recognition technology, allowing her to answer tourists’ questions.
Junco Chihira’s applications extend beyond the tourism and service sectors; she is also set to enter the elderly healthcare field. Hitoshi Tokuda, chief specialist at Toshiba’s Research and Development Center, stated that the humanoid will be integrated with various language processing systems.
Standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, Junco Chihira resembles a 26-year-old Japanese woman.
4. Jia Jia
Jia Jia is China’s first humanoid robot. This Chinese android gained widespread attention in Shanghai, captivating people around the world with her highly realistic and appealing appearance.
Developed by a research team from the University of Science and Technology of China, this remarkable robot can engage in ordinary conversations with humans while displaying subtle facial expressions. She achieves this through speech-generation algorithms and facial recognition technologies. Although her speech patterns are not yet completely smooth, Jia Jia compensates with an astonishingly human-like appearance.
Jia Jia’s realistic expressions are attributed to the special focus placed on her “eyes,” which enable her to perceive various gestures, emotions, and behaviors. Team leader Chen Xiaoping stated proudly that with additional refinements, Jia Jia and robots of her kind hold great promise for the future.
5. Sophia
Sophia is regarded as the most advanced humanoid robot to date. Debuting in 2016, she was a groundbreaking creation, with her ability to interact with humans standing out as an unprecedented feature in machine technology. Designed by Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics, Sophia was modeled after iconic Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn. The creators’ goal was to develop her as a companion for the elderly in nursing homes or as a crowd manager at events.
Sophia holds the distinction of being the world’s first robot citizen and the first robot innovation ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The core objective behind her creation was to develop a robot capable of acquiring social skills. Embedded with neural networks and artificial intelligence, Sophia can recognize human faces, understand gestures and emotions, interact with diverse individuals, and respond appropriately.
