Crafting the Perfect Dressing Room
A dressing room is much more than a storage area for clothing. It is a personal retreat where elegance, comfort, and practicality come together. At Ixia London, we recently completed a custom-designed dressing room that perfectly captures this idea. From the natural wood finishes and brass details to the delicate textured panels, every feature was carefully selected to create a peaceful, sophisticated environment where getting ready becomes an enjoyable daily ritual.

Creating a beautiful dressing room involves more than choosing attractive finishes. The space must also reflect your habits, accommodate your belongings, and support your everyday routine. By combining thoughtful planning with carefully selected materials and details, you can create a dressing room that is both visually appealing and highly functional. Here are five essential steps to help you achieve a similar result.
1. Understand Your Storage Needs
Every successful dressing room begins with a clear understanding of your wardrobe and lifestyle. Consider how you prefer to organize your clothing. Do you need plenty of hanging space, or would you rather store most items on shelves and in drawers? Would you like your shoes and handbags displayed openly, or would you prefer to keep them concealed behind cabinet doors?
Before planning the design, take time to sort through your existing wardrobe. Removing items you no longer wear can help you identify what you genuinely need to store. This process also makes it easier to determine how much space should be allocated to different categories of clothing and accessories.
If organizing your belongings feels overwhelming, professional wardrobe stylists and home organization specialists can help you simplify your collection. Their guidance can ensure that your new dressing room accommodates the items you use regularly while maintaining a clean and uncluttered appearance.
2. Design the Layout and Storage
Once your storage requirements are clear, the next step is to develop a practical layout. Accurate measurements are essential for making the most of the available space, so measure your room and belongings carefully before finalizing any design decisions.
Think about how you normally arrange your clothes and accessories. Do you prefer jeans on hangers or folded neatly in drawers? Do you need separate compartments for jewelry, handbags, workout clothing, or seasonal items? Answering these questions will help you create a storage system that works naturally with your daily habits.
Consider the placement and dimensions of hanging rails, shelving, drawers, and cabinets. Frequently used items should be easy to reach, while occasional-use belongings can be stored in less accessible areas. A well-planned layout ensures that everything has a designated place and that the room remains easy to navigate.
Taking the time to plan these details in advance can also help prevent wasted space and make your finished dressing room feel more spacious and organized.
3. Choose Custom Cabinetry and Quality Materials
Bespoke joinery is one of the most important elements of a thoughtfully designed dressing room. Custom-made cabinets and storage units allow you to use the available space efficiently while creating a design that complements the architecture and interior style of your home.
Working with experienced interior designers and cabinetry specialists can help turn your ideas into a practical design. They can tailor the dimensions, finishes, and internal storage features to suit your requirements, ensuring that the final result feels cohesive rather than assembled from unrelated pieces.
Material selection is equally important. Consider how the colors, textures, and finishes will work with the rest of your home. Whenever possible, examine material samples in the actual room, since natural and artificial lighting can influence how colors appear.
In this project, wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries, known as Suit Yourself, was used to line the interiors of the wardrobes. Its understated pattern and tactile finish introduced a subtle layer of sophistication, softening the cabinetry and adding visual interest without overwhelming the overall design.
Combining carefully chosen materials with tailored craftsmanship helps create a dressing room that feels distinctive, elegant, and consistent with your home's character.
4. Make Lighting a Priority
Lighting plays a vital role in both the functionality and atmosphere of a dressing room. Good illumination allows you to distinguish colors accurately, locate clothing easily, and see the finer details of your outfits. At the same time, carefully positioned lighting can transform the room into a warm and relaxing personal space.
Integrated lighting inside wardrobes and drawers is particularly useful because it illuminates items that might otherwise remain hidden in darker corners. General ceiling lighting provides an even distribution of light throughout the room, while additional lighting near mirrors can help you see your appearance more clearly.
Decorative fixtures also contribute to the overall design. In this dressing room, the Blossom pendant light by Porta Romana serves as an elegant focal point. Its sculptural shape complements the refined interior, while its gentle glow creates a calm and inviting atmosphere.
For the best results, combine practical illumination with decorative lighting. This layered approach makes the room easier to use while giving it the welcoming ambiance of a carefully designed interior.
5. Perfect the Finishing Details
Small design choices can have a significant influence on the final appearance of a dressing room. Cabinet handles, metal trims, decorative accents, and other hardware may seem like minor elements, but they help determine whether the overall design feels coordinated and complete.
For this project, the handles were selected from Joseph Giles, whose refined hardware designs complemented the room's sophisticated aesthetic. Consistent metal finishes throughout the space helped connect the different elements and create a harmonious visual effect.
When choosing these finishing touches, consider how each detail relates to the cabinetry, lighting, wall finishes, and other materials. Coordinating hardware can create a polished appearance, while subtle contrasts in texture or finish can introduce character without disrupting the overall balance.
It is also worth considering practical factors such as durability, ease of use, and maintenance. Beautiful details should enhance the experience of using the room, not simply make it look attractive.
Create a Dressing Room That Reflects Your Lifestyle
There is no universal formula for designing the perfect dressing room. Every home has different dimensions, every wardrobe has different storage requirements, and every homeowner has their own preferences.
A successful design brings these elements together through thoughtful planning, customized storage, carefully selected materials, effective lighting, and well-considered finishing details. The result should feel beautiful and organized while making your everyday routine simpler.
Ixia London is currently working on several dressing room projects across London, including two in Chiswick and another in Dulwich. Each project presents its own opportunities and challenges, demonstrating why a personalized approach is so important.
Whether you are planning a spacious walk-in wardrobe or transforming a smaller room into a practical dressing area, begin by identifying your needs and developing a design around the way you live. With the right planning and attention to detail, you can create a dressing room that combines lasting elegance with everyday convenience.
